Area Description Wisp now offers 32 trails and 13 lifts. As if that were not enough, Wisp doesn't plan to stand pat on growth. They have future expansion plans that include a mountaintop village, a redesigned golf course, an Adventure Sports Center, and a Lakeside Club. Wisp Resort is rapidly growing into the mid-Atlantic's finest four-season resort community! Wisp is pumping up the fun even more with the addition of one expert, seven beginner and two intermediate trails, and that allows North Camp to offer excitement for skiers and boarders of every level. With more than 100" of natural snowfall per season, Wisp offers great Cross Country skiing as well. Wisp has also added two new quad chairlifts during the 2005-2006 off season that increase their lift capacity and that decreases your time on the slopes. Snowboarders rate Wisp as one of the best terrain parks anywhere. They actually offer TWO terrain parks and a halfpipe that is 400 feet long. Tubing is also great fun at Wisp with tubing lanes measuring a whopping 750 feet! (This is unquestionably the best tubing park in the region!) What's New at Wisp Resort for 2006-2007 We had the pleasure of visiting Wisp last January and while they made these amazing upgrades prior to last season, they bear repeating for those that didn't visit Wisp last season. Hint: Make plans to try Wisp this season! By any standards, a 40% expansion in skiable acreage is an aggressive undertaking. But that's what Wisp did when they added their North Camp terrain last season. Additionally, they have what has to be one of the top (if not the top) snowmaking plants and infrastructure in the Mid Atlantic and Southeast region. The system has a pumping capacity of approximately 15,000 gallons per minute from a new 10 million gallon reservoir. Even more important, the snowmaking project enabled Wisp Resort to open on schedule for skiing and snowboarding in December 2005, providing excellent conditions. With fine snow base, Wisp extended their season into April, exceeding expectations for snow production and quality. Automation is Key Wisp Resort now operates with full automation of pump stations, trail lighting, cameras and snowmaking equipment. The system relies on a new fiber optic network and Allen Bradley programmable logic controllers for comprehensive ski area management, including building and slop lighting, HVAC control, lift monitoring, electric power monitoring, weather updates, security and webcam feeds. On the slopes, a series of computerized weather stations measure temperature, wind direction and speed, as well as humidity. The central processor then dictates water flow and pressure to a total of more than 250 snowmakers to deliver the optimum snow consistency. The snowmaking expansion features 113 new Viking SnowtowersTM from SMI. |
