Dear Adventurer,
Winter greetings and welcome to Issue #2 of The Guide, ASCI's newsletter. Milestones in
the last months of 2006 complexion and initial testing of the whitewater course, moving into
our mountaintop operations building, and hiring 3 more full-time staff members. The 'big'
milestone lies ahead: the formal opening of the whitewater course in Spring 2007 for guided
rafting and private boating. Our work now focuses on switching from the building phase to
operations.

ASCI Grows
In November ASCI hired Micheal Shamblen as our business manager. Mike picked up our
financial reigns with rigor and finesse. Mike originally hails from West Virginia and is proud
graduate of WVU. Before joining ASCI, Mike worked in Tampa, FL directing strategic growth
for the niche construction contractors. He brings a keen financial sense, balanced with a
passion for the outdoors. He also doubles as our interim staff photographer.

Local kayak legend Brian Homberg joined the ASCI team as our or whitewater program
coordinator. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian has lived in Garrett County for over 10
years. HE brings to ASCI a background in both marketing and customer service. Brian was
also a member of the U.S. Whitewater Team in the late 80s and early 90s, and has guided
many of the classic runs in the Mid-Adlantic states. Brian's worldclass knowledge gives ASCI
a solid foundation for it's guided rafting and whitewater instruction program.

Nancy Beakes also joined the team as ASCi facilities and events coordinator. Nancy has
extensive experience in outdoor retail, business administration and customer service, and
has taught kayaking for years. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and her years as
a U.S. Whitewater team member and avid freestyle paddler for the general publics first
contact with ASCI. Nancy grew up in Upstate New York and recently moved from Bethesda,
MD. In addition to overseeing reservations and event coordination, Nancy will also help with
instruction and guiding.

Testing Redux
Thank you in everyone that was invited to partake in our testing efforts. Patience is our
mantra, as various weather and technical challenges have delayed formal testing to the
middle of January. We were able to run the course for two days in November, and that small
window showed the courses potential for performing beyond our expectations and helped us
identify needed adjustments. Our hardworking and innovative contractor crews have met
every challenge with efficiency and enduring optimism. For anyone previously invited to
assist in testing, please correspond with or call Taylor to partake in future testing efforts. Be
sure to bring your pogies and winter paddling gear.

Home at Last
The big event of the winter has been the move from temporary headquarters at Garrett
College to the new operations building. Located only 20 feet from the course's edge, it
houses ASCI offices, retail space, meeting rooms, gear rental storage, changing rooms and
the ticketing/reservation offices. Fitting handsomely within the rustic architecture of the
mountaintop, the building (and the currently empty whitewater couse itself) has drawn droves
of skiers and mountaintop visitors. While closed to the public until it's Grand Opening in the
Spring, we invite anyone to call ahead for a guided tour.

Calendar
The ASCI events calendar is filling up quickly and promises to be an exciting inaugural
season of races and special events. The first annual "ASCI Showdown" is scheduled for the
end of June. This event combines a professional bouldering competition and gear demo with
a freestyle kayaking event. ASCI id the official host to the 2007 Whitewater Slalom National
Championships on August 4 to 5, an open race that will feature the current National Team
before it travels to China for the Beijing Pre-Olympic event in August. A Garrett County
Adventure Sports Triatlon is also tentatively scheduled for October 2007. Stay tuned to the
website for a full events calendar.

How much to go rafting?
This has been the most common question asked from our visitors to the course and website.
Our core program is a guided raft trip, lasting 2 hours and costing $50. As part of our
pre-season promotion, gift packs for guided trips (i.e. 3 people on one trip or three seperate
individual trips) are being sold for $100. You can purchase these online when our
commercial website debuts in February, or you can call (1-877-300-ASCI) to order. Please
consult our new brochure (or download a PDF version on the website) for all ASCI program
prices. Other programs include whitewater and rock climbing clinics, guided climbing and
rappelling trips, and private boat access to the course.

What next?
Come visit us, wander the quickly changing grounds of our mountaintop campus, watch the
web cam and peruse our growing library of images showing paddlers on the course, climbers
on the rocks at ASCI's Fork Run Recreation Area ( a mile southwest of the course) and other
exciting shots of adventure sports in the greater region.
